After studying for her English PGCE, at Durham University, Mrs Bell’s first teaching job was at Red House Academy in Sunderland where she joined the teaching and learning team and also found a new passion, promoting reading and supporting with literacy across the curriculum. Helping students to find joy in books and using them as a platform to succeed became very important to her. The role allowed Mrs Bell to fully understand the link between success in literacy and being able to access and succeed in the whole curriculum. In her role as Second in the English Department, with Responsibility for KS3, helped Mrs Bell to really understand the importance of a smooth transition between primary and secondary school, as well as the curriculum experience that they had enjoyed before KS3. Working closely with local schools helped Mrs Bell to ensure that her students are challenged and supported from first entry into KS3.
Mrs Bell’s love of teaching and learning then led her to apply to a school in Newcastle which had a very different approach to other schools that she had experience of. Studio West’s pioneering vision is to revolutionize the way our young people are taught and ensure they are properly prepared for work in a way which will enable them to smoothly transfer from the classroom to the workplace at whatever level they decide to enter employment. She had to be a part of it.
